I'm sorry to hear of Paul's passing. I only knew Paul for a short time, but he seemed like a good sort, if perhaps lost in the moral wilderness that is Africa. But then aren't we all now. In truth our friendship had began to wane over money appropriately enough. The upside for Paul of his various schemes was always quite clear, the benefits for my own interests were decidedly less so. In the end I had to make a choice between coming to his aid at Mike's as the city devolved into chaos, or defend a priest who'd been generous to me in town. It wasn't an easy choice, but ultimately I felt that perhaps in one quick decision I could atone for so much darkness. Funny that. I'd always felt that one of the few virtues of democracy was that it asked you to do the right thing so infrequently. To be a good man for fifteen minutes once every two years. Well this is Africa, and democracy is damned hard to come by, but in the moment I chose the priest over our friend Paul, well...I was a good man for that moment. Not so much before, and almost never since.

Again, my condolences.
